SOLJA Claims Authorities Detained 38 Somaliland Journalists in 2022 Alone

The Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) claims that authorities in the breakaway region have detained 38 journalists thus far in 2022 alone.

SOLJA issued a statement on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, which was celebrated on November 2.

In the statement, the organization said that Somaliland journalists continue to suffer at the hands of local authorities.

“Arbitrary arrests and threats from authorities is the norm,” SOLJA added.

It also cited the fact that authorities have banned media organizations such as the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) from operating in the country.

Others, such as CBATV and MMTV, had to shut down for two months.

SOLJA added that the number of journalists detained this year alone is twice what was experienced in 2021.
