Somali Cabinet Charts Bold Course for 2026 Reforms

Mogadishu, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday chaired the nation’s weekly cabinet meeting in Mogadishu, rallying ministers to accelerate state-building and deepen public trust through improved services and democratic reforms.

According to a statement from Villa Somalia, the discussions centered on consolidating recent security gains, enhancing essential services, and advancing the country’s long-awaited transition toward full democratization. The President emphasized that Somalia has reached a critical turning point where security progress must be matched by visible improvements in citizens’ daily lives.

Ministers reviewed preparations for the 2026 national budget, with plans to significantly increase allocations for healthcare, education, infrastructure, and other social priorities. President Mohamud urged his cabinet to ensure that the budget reflects not only fiscal discipline but also hope and tangible progress for ordinary Somalis.

The meeting also assessed political reforms, including preparations for future elections and the strengthening of local governance structures. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to building institutions capable of serving all regions equitably, regardless of clan or geography.

While security remains fragile in several areas, the government insists that coordinated operations with regional states and international partners have created space for development to take root. The President called on ministers to seize the momentum, warning that stability must be defended not only by soldiers but by schools, hospitals, and fair administration.

As the cabinet dispersed, there was a clear sense of urgency. Somalia’s leadership knows that expectations are rising—and that 2026 will be a defining year for the nation’s path from recovery to renewal.
