Somali Children Flown to Milan for Life-Saving Surgery

Mogadishu, Somalia – Two Somali children have departed for Milan to undergo critical life-saving surgeries, following a joint initiative supported by the Italian Embassy in Somalia, the Hormuud Salaam Foundation (HSF), and Siman Hospital.

The farewell ceremony, held last week, brought together Italian officials, the Chairman of HSF, and the Director of Siman Hospital, who praised the collaboration that made the transfer possible. The children, whose conditions required specialized medical treatment unavailable in Somalia, were accompanied with gratitude and high hopes for recovery.

This humanitarian effort was made possible through the contribution of the Lombardy Region in Italy, which facilitated the children’s admission into advanced medical facilities in Milan. Both Somali and Italian representatives underscored that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to saving lives and strengthening ties between the two nations.

The initiative also highlights the critical role of Somali institutions like the HSF and Siman Hospital, which continue to identify and support patients in need of urgent care abroad. According to organizers, the collaboration is part of a broader effort to expand access to healthcare for vulnerable families while also showcasing international solidarity.

Officials expressed optimism that the successful treatment of the children in Milan would inspire further cooperation in the field of health, creating opportunities for more Somali patients to access life-saving interventions that are currently beyond the capacity of the country’s fragile health system.
