Farmers in Somalia have avoided incurring huge losses following the installation of an early warning system.
Abdullahi Abdirahman, the General Manager of the Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Agency (HADMA) in Puntland, made this revelation recently.
Abdirahman said that farmers benefited greatly from the installation of the Drought Operations Coordination Center in Garowe.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) helped set up the coordination center in the administrative capital of Puntland.
“Whenever we receive notice of likely flooding, we immediate resend the notification and warning to farmers living in low-lying areas,” Abdirahman said.
He also said that HAMDA continues to work closely with relevant government agencies and other stakeholders to raise awareness of possible catastrophes.
Abdirahman mentioned that they use phones, televisions, and radios as avenues for increasing awareness.
