Somali Government Allocates $700,000 for Awdal Drought Relief Efforts

Mogadishu – The Federal Government of Somalia has announced a significant emergency allocation to support communities battling drought in the Awdal region.

Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu, the Commissioner of the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mahamuud Moallim, confirmed that $700,000 has been disbursed to the Awdal Region Drought Relief Committee. The funds are intended to provide immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, water, and essential supplies, to families suffering from acute shortages.

The announcement came during a gathering attended by ministers and parliamentarians representing the worst-affected areas, underscoring the urgency of the situation. Officials stressed that the prolonged dry conditions have severely impacted livelihoods, particularly among pastoralist and farming communities, leading to heightened displacement and rising humanitarian needs.

“This allocation is a lifeline for the people of Awdal. It reflects the government’s commitment to stand with citizens during this difficult period,” Commissioner Moallim said, adding that further coordination with regional authorities and humanitarian partners will ensure the aid reaches the most vulnerable households.

Parliamentarians present welcomed the move, describing it as a necessary intervention to prevent worsening food insecurity and to stabilize affected communities. They urged continued government focus on both short-term relief and long-term resilience measures, including investment in water infrastructure and sustainable livelihood programs.

The drought crisis in northern Somalia has been escalating over recent months, with erratic rains and depleted pastures pushing many families into distress. Relief agencies warn that without swift and sustained assistance, the humanitarian toll could deepen.

The government has pledged to monitor the distribution of funds closely and to mobilize additional resources if needed, working alongside local committees and international partners.
