Somali Leaders Urged to Avoid Political Tensions from Dead NISA Agent’s Fallout

Somali leaders have been urged to avoid political tensions arising out of the fallout from the death of a female agent working for the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).

On September 7, representatives of Somalia’s international partners issued a statement encouraging leaders to reduce political posturing.

Their statement followed the recent announcement by NISA that Ikran Tahlil had died at the hands of Al-Shabaab militants.

Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble was among the leaders who called out NISA for shoddy investigations and an inaccurate statement on the cause of the death of the 24-year old agent.

According to the representatives of the country’s international partners, Somali leaders need to put more focus on the electoral process.

Following Tahlil’s death, Prime Minister Roble sacked Fahad Yasin from his position as the Director of NISA.

Immediately thereafter, President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo said that Roble had no such powers.

Farmaajo called Roble’s attempts to sack Yasin as “unconstitutional.”

Yasin’s sacking and reinstatement is likely to open a fresh can of worms considering that Farmaajo and Roble are reportedly not seeing eye-to-eye.

Their differences could scupper the country’s attempts to hold parliamentary and presidential elections before the end of the year.
