Somali Leaders Welcome Election of Northeastern State Speaker

Mogadishu, Somalia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre have extended their congratulations to Adan Abdullahi Aw-Hassan following his election as Speaker of Parliament in the newly established Northeastern State of Somalia.

In separate messages released on Saturday, the two leaders praised the smooth conduct of the regional parliamentary process and described Aw-Hassan’s election as a positive step toward strengthening Somalia’s federalism and deepening democratic governance.

President Mohamud lauded the lawmakers for completing their leadership vote in a “peaceful and transparent manner,” urging the new Speaker and his colleagues to prioritize legislation that fosters stability, reconciliation, and development in the region.

Prime Minister Barre also welcomed the outcome, stressing the importance of cooperative relations between the federal government and the emerging state institutions. He called on Speaker Aw-Hassan to work inclusively with all representatives and ensure that the voices of local communities are reflected in the state’s political agenda.

The creation of Northeastern State marks the latest milestone in Somalia’s evolving federal system. Regional authorities have emphasized that the establishment of a functioning parliament and elected leadership provides the foundation for governance, service delivery, and representation in national affairs.

Political observers note that the election of Aw-Hassan comes at a time when Somalia is pressing ahead with security operations, constitutional reforms, and preparations for broader political transition. The successful organization of parliamentary leadership in Northeastern State is seen as a signal of growing institutional maturity across Somalia’s federal member states.

Aw-Hassan, who is expected to be sworn in formally in the coming days, has pledged to serve all constituents impartially and to work with both the regional administration and the federal government in advancing peace and development.
