Somalia’s navy forces have been encouraged to prepare to protect the country’s territorial waters.
Major General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhuyidin, the Chief of Somali Defense Force, issued this rallying call on Thursday.
He was speaking when visiting members of the armed forces earlier today.
Maj. Gen. Muhuyidin’s sentiments come in the wake of the recent agreement signed between Ethiopia and Somaliland.
The agreement grants Ethiopia exclusive access to one of Somaliland’s major ports.
However, Somalia has spoken out harshly against the move by Ethiopia. It has vowed to protect its territory using any means necessary.
Somalia continues to treat Somaliland as part of its territory.
Somaliland broke away from Somalia in the early 1990s.
