Somali Police Arrive in Eldher District for the First Time Since 1991

Officers from Somali Police Force (SPF) arrived in Eldher district for the first time in over three decades.

The officers arrived in the district on Wednesday.

Their arrival follows a recent request by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud regarding the need to secure newly liberated areas in the country.

Eldher last enjoyed the services of Somali police officers in 1991.

The civil war that ensued that year forced the police to leave the district. This situation made it easier for Al-Shabaab to invade and control the area for years.

In recent months, the federal government has demonstrated a willingness to reassert control over every part of the nation.
