New York, United States – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held talks with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to deeper cooperation with the global body.
According to officials close to the discussions, the meeting focused on expanding the Somalia–UN partnership across key areas including peacebuilding, security sector reform, humanitarian relief, and sustainable development initiatives.
President Mohamud emphasized his government’s ongoing efforts to stabilize liberated territories, combat terrorism, and strengthen state institutions.
Secretary-General Guterres reportedly commended Somalia’s recent progress in security transitions and debt relief milestones, pledging continued UN support toward institution-building, human rights protection, and resilience programs aimed at vulnerable communities affected by conflict and climate shocks.
Both leaders also discussed the upcoming transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to its successor framework, stressing the need for sustained international backing to avoid a security vacuum.
The meeting comes at a crucial moment as Mogadishu seeks greater investment in long-term recovery programs beyond emergency aid. With Somalia positioning itself as a key regional partner in the Horn of Africa, the renewed commitment from the UN is seen as a boost to its diplomatic and development agenda.
The leaders agreed to maintain close coordination through UN agencies operating in Somalia, with further technical consultations expected in the coming months.
