President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has issued two decrees rebranding military camps in Somalia to honor the sacrifices of two notable figures in the fight against terrorism.
General Gordon Base has been renamed after Emirati Colonel Mohamed Mubarak Al Mansor, replacing the name of Somali Major General Mohamed Ibrahim Farah.
This reflects Somalia’s acknowledgment of international allies who contributed to its security and stability.
Damaanyo Army Barrack has been renamed after Major General Mohamed Ibrahim Farah, ensuring that his legacy remains honored despite the renaming of General Gordon Base.
Both leaders tragically lost their lives in al-Shabab attacks. Whereas Major General Farah lost his life in October 2012, Al-Shabaab killed Colonel Al Mansor in a February 2024 attack.
The decrees aim to balance respect for Somalia’s heroes and gratitude toward international partners who supported the nation in its fight against extremism.
