Somali President Says Civil Service is Full of Ghost Workers

The Somali President has said that the country’s civil service is full of ghost workers.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said this while addressing the public over the weekend.

In his speech, President Mohamud specifically mentioned 3,500-5,000 people that are on the government payroll despite not working.

He added that many of them are not even in Somalia.

His statement attracted the wrath of the rest of the country who called for urgent action to be taken against the errant civil servants.

Most of those who reacted to President Mohamud’s speech expressed outrage at the claims.

Currently, the East African nation has a national budget that stands at over $960 million.

President Mohamud’s shocking statement came at a time when his government plans to introduce the biometric registration of all its workers.
