Somali Prime Minister Begins Official Visit to Serbia

Belgrade, Serbia – Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre arrived in Belgrade on Monday, leading a high-level delegation for an official visit aimed at deepening Somalia–Serbia relations.

The Prime Minister’s trip underscores Somalia’s efforts to broaden its international partnerships and strengthen cooperation with European nations. Upon arrival, Barre and his delegation were welcomed by senior Serbian officials, setting the stage for a series of meetings that will cover a wide range of strategic areas.

According to Somali government sources, the discussions will focus on trade and economic cooperation, security collaboration, and cultural and educational exchanges. Both countries are expected to explore opportunities to expand market access, enhance agricultural cooperation, and promote investment.

On the security front, talks will address ways to share expertise and strengthen joint efforts in combating transnational threats, while cultural and academic institutions from both sides are expected to consider student exchange programs and collaborative research.

The visit follows a recent meeting between Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Omer Ali and his Serbian counterpart in Belgrade, where the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral ties. Barre’s presence is expected to build on that momentum, signaling Somalia’s intention to diversify its diplomatic outreach and foster mutually beneficial partnerships.

Somalia and Serbia have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, with shared interests in international cooperation and development. Analysts suggest that this visit could mark a turning point in elevating those ties to a new level of practical engagement.

The Prime Minister’s delegation is scheduled to hold a series of high-level discussions with Serbian leaders throughout the week before returning to Mogadishu.
