Somali Speaker, UN Envoy Hold Talks on Boosting Cooperation

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s House of the People Speaker, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, met on Sunday with UN Special Representative James Swan to discuss ways of strengthening collaboration between the Federal Parliament and the United Nations.

During the meeting in Mogadishu, Swan briefed the Speaker on ongoing UN programs supporting Somalia’s governance, peacebuilding, humanitarian response, and development priorities. He reiterated the UN’s commitment to working closely with Somali institutions to consolidate state-building gains and respond to the country’s urgent needs.

Speaker Madobe welcomed the update, expressing deep appreciation for the UN’s long-standing role in supporting Somalia’s recovery. He underscored the importance of sustained and increased international assistance to reinforce national stability, accelerate development, and enhance the capacity of democratic institutions.

“Somalia values the partnership with the United Nations, particularly at this critical stage when our nation is striving for stronger institutions, peace, and sustainable progress,” Madobe said, according to parliamentary sources.

The discussions also touched on Somalia’s reform agenda, security transition, and preparations for future political milestones, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to constructive dialogue and cooperation.

The meeting comes amid broader international efforts to bolster Somalia’s resilience against security threats and climate-induced challenges, while supporting long-term state-building initiatives.
