Somali Think-Tank Claims FGS and FMS Plan to Rig Upcoming Elections

A Somalia-based think-tank has claimed the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) plan to rig the upcoming elections.

Heritage Institute for Policy Studies (HIPS), the Mogadishu-based, reported that the composition of the elections commission is a recipe for disaster.

It warned of the likelihood of electoral malpractices too unless the membership of the electoral commission is changed.

Recently, FGS was accused of filling the Federal Electoral Commissions (FECs) with its cronies, intelligence officers, and civil servants.

Consequently, HIPS feels that such a membership could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

It said that the political leadership at FGS and FMS had demonstrated willingness to commit acts that derail democracy in the country.

HIPS also warned that the political leadership in the country had gone against the spirit of the agreement signed in Mogadishu during September’s National Consultative Conference.
