The leaders of all trade unions in Somalia held discussions with the Secretary-General of the East African Community (EAC).
Their meeting with Dr. Peter Mutuku Mathuki, the EAC Secretary-General, took place in Mogadishu on Wednesday.
Dr. Mathuki had traveled to Mogadishu to present a report to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Somalia’s accelerated application for EAC membership.
The Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU) commended Dr. Mathuki as a “long-time friend and trade union comrade.”
In a statement published on October 26, FESTU expressed hope that Somalia’s bid to join the regional economic bloc carries numerous benefits.
These benefits include deeper regional economic integration, labor mobility, and the elimination of trade barriers.
