A delegation comprising women senators from Somalia traveled to Rwanda this week on a benchmarking tour.
The women senators will spend one week in Rwanda to learn ways of promoting women empowerment and gender equality.
They were under the leadership of Senator Shukri Adan Mohamed, who is the Chairperson of the Women’s Committee of the Senate.
The team visited several offices in Rwanda.
These included the Senate, Isange One Stop Center, and the Gender Monitoring Office.
Currently, women parliamentarians in Somalia make up 24 percent of the Members of Parliament (MPs). In the last elections in 2022, they targeted 30 percent representation.
Rwanda is the only country in the world with a parliament mainly made up of women.
More than 37 percent of Senators are women. The Chamber of Deputies comprises over 61 percent women legislators in Rwanda.
