Djibouti City — Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Djibouti on Saturday for an official visit aimed at deepening bilateral ties and addressing pressing regional matters with Djiboutian President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh.
Upon his arrival at Ambouli International Airport, President Mohamud was warmly received by senior Djiboutian government officials and representatives of the Somali diaspora. The visit marks a continuation of the close cooperation between the two Horn of Africa nations, which share historical, cultural, and strategic ties.
According to official sources, the two heads of state will engage in high-level discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the areas of security, trade, and infrastructure.
The leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional peace and stability, particularly in relation to the fight against terrorism, maritime security in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and the political dynamics in the Horn of Africa.
“This visit reflects the importance Somalia places on its fraternal relations with Djibouti. President Mohamud is committed to enhancing regional diplomacy and working closely with key allies to advance peace and development in the Horn,” read a statement from Villa Somalia.
The visit comes at a time of significant regional realignment and heightened diplomatic activity, with Somalia seeking to bolster its partnerships amid ongoing tensions with Ethiopia and the continuing transition of African Union peacekeeping forces.
President Mohamud and President Guelleh have met on multiple occasions in recent years, most notably within the context of regional summits hosted by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Djibouti continues to play a key mediating role in regional affairs and hosts several international military bases, making it a strategic partner for Somalia.
The outcome of the talks is expected to lead to a renewed commitment to joint initiatives and possibly new agreements aimed at advancing shared interests.
