Somalia and UK Co-Lead Global Dialogue on Social Protection in Crisis Zones

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somali Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama and United Kingdom Minister Lord Collins of Highbury co-chaired a High-Level Panel on Social Protection under the theme “Redefining Resilience,” drawing global attention to the urgent need for robust safety nets in conflict and crisis-affected regions.

The event, which brought together policymakers, international partners, and development experts, focused on strategies to strengthen inclusive and shock-responsive social protection systems. Key priorities included mobilizing political will, securing sustainable financing, and addressing the needs of the most vulnerable communities impacted by fragility and instability.

Deputy PM Salah Jama reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to advancing inclusive national frameworks that safeguard the wellbeing of citizens amid ongoing humanitarian challenges. “In Somalia, building resilience means investing in systems that protect lives and livelihoods, especially during crises,” he said. “We are determined to put the most vulnerable at the center of our development agenda.”

Lord Collins echoed the importance of international collaboration, noting, “A shared commitment to social protection is essential to achieving sustainable peace and development. The UK stands ready to support Somalia and other fragile states in creating resilient societies.”

The panel concluded with a call for greater global coordination and investment in adaptive social protection, stressing that resilience must go beyond recovery — it must enable communities not just to survive, but to thrive.
