Somalia Elections Could be Delayed as Second Round of Dhusamareb Talks Postponed

The second round of Dhusamareb talks that were expected to kick off on August 15, which is this Saturday, have been postponed.

Consequently, there are fears that the postponement could force Somalia to delay the elections, which were expected in November 2020 and February 2021.

News regarding the postponement of the talks emerged on Thursday.

Reportedly, the recent removal of Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire from office by the House of Representatives has been cited as the main reason for postponing the talks.

Secondly, the unresolved issues between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) under President Mohamed Farmaajo and the Federal Member States (FMS) made the situation worse.

The first round of the talks, which ended in late July, offered the country a glimpse of hope as it saw all the main political leaders gather in Dhusamareb to discuss elections-related issues.

At the end of the talks, all the leaders at the meeting agreed that the country could not afford to delay elections.

Currently, Farmaajo seems to be preoccupied with the search for a new Prime Minister.

A newly appointed Prime Minister would also need time to appoint his cabinet but only with the approval of the House of Representatives.
