Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s National Emergency Committee convened at the headquarters of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) in Mogadishu to enhance the country’s emergency response capabilities.
The meeting brought together top officials and key stakeholders to assess current challenges and set priorities for improving the quality of health care, upgrading emergency equipment, and strengthening disaster preparedness mechanisms.
Amid ongoing humanitarian crises, including natural disasters, health emergencies, and conflict-induced displacements, the Committee underscored the urgent need for a more resilient and responsive emergency system. A central focus of the meeting was mobilizing resources through a coordinated fundraising effort involving government institutions, private sector players, and the Somali public.
Officials stressed that improved collaboration across sectors is essential to expanding the country’s capacity to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies. The committee reaffirmed that a unified national approach is critical to meeting the needs of vulnerable populations and reducing the impact of future crises.
SoDMA, which leads disaster response and risk reduction efforts in Somalia, is playing a central role in shaping policies and partnerships to build national resilience.
The latest meeting marks a significant step toward scaling up preparedness efforts as Somalia faces compounded humanitarian challenges from climate shocks, insecurity, and underfunded emergency operations.
The National Emergency Committee called on Somali citizens, businesses, and international partners to support the country’s goal of building a more capable and self-reliant emergency system.
