Somalia Fails to Honor Deadline for Forming Electoral Committees

Somalia failed to honor the deadline for forming electoral committees at the federal and state levels thus sparking fears of possible delay in elections.

The East African nation is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections by December 2020.

Presidential polls would then follow in February 2021.

Last month, a National Consultative Conference between the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) agreed to form electoral committees.

The committees would then take over the supervision of the polls instead of the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC).

FGS and FMS set a deadline of October 20 for the regional states to submit names of their representatives for the electoral committees.

Reports indicate that only Puntland submitted its list of representatives.

Consequently, it is feared that the country could be forced to delay its elections after failing to honor such an important milestone.
