Somalia Fails to Meet New Election Deadline for the Second Time

For the second time, Somalia has failed to meet the new deadline for holding parliamentary elections.

At first, Somalia was scheduled to hold parliamentary polls in December 2020 after the term of the current parliament expired.

However, the country was unable to do that.

Consequently, the Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT) postponed the elections to January 14, 2021.

Unfortunately, the deadline passed without any meaningful elections-related activity taking place.

In its announcement, FEIT said that it expected elections for the Upper House (Senate) to kick off on Thursday.

By January 5, all candidates interested in vying for the Upper House seats were supposed to have registered.

With parliamentary elections not taking place, it remains unclear whether presidential polls will take place in February 2021, as previously scheduled.
