Somalia Government Releases 1,000 Low-Risk Prisoners over COVID-19

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has released 1,000 low-risk prisoners around the country over COVID-19 fears.

The prisoners were released following the intervention of UNDP Somalia.

The organization has frequently urged the government to release low-risk prisoners to protect them from exposure to COVID-19.

Consequently, the government heeded UNDP Somalia’s request.

Since then, authorities have quashed the imprisonment of pregnant women, the elderly, and youths jailed for petty crime.

On Wednesday, UNDP Somalia hailed the move by the government.

The organization said that letting such prisoners go is guaranteed to make the prisons around the country and the surrounding communities safer from the spread of COVID-19.
