Somalia, Indonesia Forge Closer Ties in High-Level Jakarta Meeting

Jakarta, Indonesia – Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Abdisalam Abdi Ali, met on Thursday in Jakarta with his Indonesian counterpart, Sugiono, for high-level talks aimed at deepening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

The meeting underscored the long-standing ties between Somalia and Indonesia, both members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Non-Aligned Movement. The two ministers discussed a wide range of issues including trade, education, agriculture, maritime security, and development cooperation.

Ali expressed Somalia’s appreciation for Indonesia’s continued support in international forums and reiterated Mogadishu’s commitment to expanding partnerships across Southeast Asia. He also extended an invitation for Indonesian businesses and investors to explore opportunities in Somalia’s growing sectors.

Sugiono, for his part, affirmed Indonesia’s readiness to collaborate more closely with Somalia, particularly in capacity building, vocational training, and people-to-people exchanges. He noted Indonesia’s interest in contributing to Somalia’s post-conflict reconstruction and economic recovery.

The two sides agreed to accelerate the negotiation of bilateral agreements and pledged to convene a joint commission meeting in the near future to formalize areas of cooperation.

This landmark diplomatic engagement marks a renewed momentum in Somalia-Indonesia relations, reflecting both countries’ desire to promote south-south solidarity and mutual development.
