Mogadishu, Somalia – The Ministry of Health and Human Services has issued a stern alert following confirmation that over 1,000 children in the Benadir region have contracted diphtheria, a highly contagious and potentially deadly illness. Health authorities confirmed that 50 children have perished from the outbreak, the majority of whom were not vaccinated.
According to a press statement, the ministry described this year’s spike in diphtheria cases as one of the most significant health risks confronting children, calling on parents to promptly vaccinate all children aged six months to 14 years.
The ministry revealed that a widespread diphtheria vaccination initiative in Benadir will commence on Monday, December 15-26, 2025, with vaccinations accessible at hospitals, healthcare facilities, schools, and mobile clinics across the area. The initiative seeks to curb the disease’s transmission and shield unprotected children lacking complete immunization coverage.
Health officials emphasized that diphtheria can be prevented and cautioned that without broad immunization efforts, infection and fatality rates may continue to escalate. Mothers and guardians were encouraged to collaborate with healthcare providers, seek immediate medical attention upon noticing symptoms, and refrain from postponing vaccinations.
The ministry reiterated its dedication to protecting community health and urged religious leaders, teachers, and community groups to assist in disseminating information regarding the outbreak and the critical importance of vaccination.
