Somalia Joins IMSO at IMO Assembly in London

London, United Kingdom – The Federal Republic of Somalia has officially acceded to the Convention on the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO), representing a major achievement in the country’s maritime safety and technological advancement.

The Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, formally submitted the instrument of accession to International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Mr. Arsenio Dominguez. The event occurred on the margins of the 34th Regular Session of the IMO Assembly taking place in London.

This important step underscores the Federal Government of Somalia’s commitment to bolstering maritime security and promoting global cooperation. Membership in IMSO grants access to essential worldwide satellite communication networks vital for maritime safety, search and rescue missions, and oversight of shipping in its territorial waters.

The senior-level meeting included prominent Somali representatives such as Mogadishu Port General Manager Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur Americo and Somalia’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom Abdulkadir Abdi Hashi.

Conversations with Secretary-General Dominguez centered on strengthening security in Somali waters through this partnership. The delegation discussed opportunities to update maritime institutions, reinforce coastal legal structures, and utilize IMSO resources to safeguard the nation’s extensive marine assets.

The accession aligns with a comprehensive government plan to regain control over Somalia’s maritime domain, guarantee secure routes for global trade, and cultivate a strong national blue economy.
