Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia today commemorated the 82nd anniversary of the founding of the Somali Youth League (SYL), the nation’s first political party and a cornerstone of the country’s path to independence. Established in 1943, the SYL played a pivotal role in uniting Somalis under a nationalist movement that ultimately led to the country’s independence in 1960.
Government officials, historians, youth groups, and members of the public gathered across the country to pay tribute to the SYL’s legacy. In Mogadishu, a national ceremony was held at the SYL Monument, attended by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, members of the cabinet, and descendants of the party’s founders.
“The SYL was not just a political party — it was a vision for unity, dignity, and self-determination,” said Prime Minister Barre. “Today, we honor their courage and recommit ourselves to the ideals of justice, nationhood, and peace for which they stood.”
The Somali Youth League emerged during a time of colonial rule, championing independence through peaceful political activism, community mobilization, and regional cooperation. It laid the foundation for modern Somali nationalism and contributed significantly to the creation of the Somali Republic in 1960.
Across the country, events marking the anniversary included educational seminars, cultural displays, and youth forums emphasizing the importance of civic participation and national identity.
