Mogadishu, Somalia – Police officers and international partners gathered in the Somali capital on Monday to mark International Police Day, reaffirming their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation for a safer and more secure Somalia.
The event brought together representatives from the Somali Police Force (SPF), the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), the EU Capacity Building Mission in Somalia (EUCAPSOM), Türkiye’s Embassy in Mogadishu, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS).
Speakers highlighted the progress made in reforming and professionalizing the Somali Police Force, a central pillar in the country’s security transition as AU forces gradually hand over responsibilities to national institutions. Officials emphasized the importance of building strong operational capacity, enhancing community trust, and investing in modern policing methods to counter evolving security challenges.
“International Police Day is not just a commemoration—it is a reminder of the sacrifices made and the duty we all share in building a Somalia that is safe for every citizen,” one official remarked.
The participants underscored the need for continued collaboration between Somali authorities and international partners, particularly in areas of training, technical assistance, and institutional reform. This cooperation, they said, is vital in ensuring that Somalia develops a resilient and accountable police force capable of maintaining law and order nationwide.
International Police Day is observed globally to honor law enforcement officers and recognize their contribution to public safety, peace, and justice. In Somalia, the observance comes at a pivotal time, as the country navigates security transitions and intensifies efforts to counter terrorism and organized crime.
