Mogadishu, Somalia – The Federal Republic of Somalia has expressed its deepest condolences to the government and people of South Africa following the death of Ambassador Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, a distinguished diplomat and statesman.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Somali authorities described Amb. Mahlangu’s passing as a great loss, not only to South Africa but to the wider African continent, where he was respected for his long service in public life and his commitment to advancing African solidarity.
Mahlangu, who served as South Africa’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and later as Ambassador to the United States, was widely recognized for his leadership in the post-apartheid era and his role in strengthening South Africa’s international presence. He also served as the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, playing a key part in shaping democratic governance in his country.
Somalia’s message of condolence highlighted the enduring friendship between the two nations, rooted in shared struggles for justice and independence, and reaffirmed Mogadishu’s solidarity with Pretoria at this time of national mourning.
“The people and government of Somalia stand with our South African brothers and sisters in grieving the loss of Ambassador Mahlangu, whose contributions to diplomacy, peace, and development will be remembered with deep respect,” the statement read.
Amb. Mahlangu’s legacy, Somali officials noted, serves as an inspiration for African leaders working toward unity, stability, and prosperity across the continent.
