Somalia Postpones Elections for the Third Time

Somalia has been unable to hold elections on schedule for the third successive time.

The country was scheduled to hold parliamentary elections last year thus forcing it to postpone these until December 2020.

Nevertheless, that also failed to materialize.

Consequently, the elections body was then forced to postpone the polls to January 30.

With the first month of 2021 gone, Somalia looks increasingly unlikely to hold timely parliamentary and local elections.

Furthermore, presidential polls are due on February 8, 2021 when the term of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo expires.

The term of the current parliament expired in December 2020.

With the ongoing impasse, it is not clear whether the country’s leadership has the political goodwill needed to organize elections.

However, Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) holds a fresh round of elections talks in Dhusamareb from February 1-3 with the Federal Member States (FMS).

The National FGS-FMS Conference is likely to solve some of the most pressing issues thus allowing Somalia to finally hold elections.
