Mogadishu, Somalia — The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) convened a public forum in the capital on Tuesday under the theme “Public Perspectives and National Identity,” bringing together citizens, officials and experts to discuss the future of Somalia’s national ID system.
The event focused on streamlining access to government services, improving registration procedures, and deepening public confidence in the national identification process. Panelists from across the agency engaged directly with attendees, highlighting current challenges and proposing practical solutions to accelerate the delivery of ID cards nationwide.
Participants emphasized the critical role of a functional identification system in advancing national development, including access to healthcare, education, financial services, and electoral participation. Suggestions ranged from expanding mobile registration centers to enhancing public awareness campaigns and strengthening transparency in data handling.
NIRA officials reaffirmed their commitment to inclusive registration, noting that a trusted and efficient ID system is essential to state-building and social cohesion.
The forum concluded with a call for continued dialogue between the government and the public, as Somalia positions its national ID program as a cornerstone of governance, security, and economic progress.
