Somalia Puts Youth at the Heart of National Transformation

Mogadishu, Somalia – The Ministry of Youth and Sports convened a National Consultation Summit with Federal Member State (FMS) ministers this week, placing young Somalis at the forefront of the country’s future development and peacebuilding efforts.

The summit, held in Mogadishu, centered on aligning the National Transformation Plan with the National Youth Policy and the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) Action Plan. Participants discussed how Somali youth—who make up more than 70% of the population—can play a stronger role in civic engagement, governance, and national reconciliation.

Minister of Youth and Sports emphasized that empowering young people is not only a demographic necessity but also a strategic investment in Somalia’s long-term stability.

“Our youth are the backbone of this country. By ensuring they are actively involved in decision-making and peacebuilding, we are securing a brighter, more inclusive future for Somalia,” the minister said.

FMS ministers echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for coordinated policies that address challenges facing young people, including unemployment, limited access to education, and vulnerability to recruitment by extremist groups. They also underscored the importance of equipping youth with skills for innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership.

The summit produced a joint commitment to strengthen collaboration between the federal and state levels in implementing the YPS Action Plan, particularly in areas of political participation, social cohesion, and economic empowerment. Civil society organizations and youth representatives who attended welcomed the discussions, urging leaders to ensure that commitments translate into concrete opportunities and sustainable programs.

Observers noted that the gathering marks a significant step in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to build inclusive governance structures and to recognize youth not just as beneficiaries, but as active agents of change.
