Somalia Regional Leaders Meet to Discuss Postponed Elections

All the regional leaders in Somalia are scheduled to meet to discuss several issues affecting the Horn of Africa nation.

Top of the agenda is the recent announcement by National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) to postpone the eagerly awaited elections of 2020.

A joint-statement released by the leaders indicates that the meeting would take place on July 9, 2020 in Dhusamareb, which is the administrative capital of Galmudug State.

Leaders representing all the five Federal Member States (FMS) of Jubbaland, Galmudug, Southwest, HirShabelle, and Puntland have confirmed their attendance.

The news comes after the one between Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the regional leaders failed to take place.

The FGS-FMS meeting was scheduled for July 5-8. FGS is yet to give reasons for failing to host the meeting as initially planned.

Somalia, which was to hold elections on November 2020 under the universal suffrage system, has postponed them to 2021.

The decision to postpone the polls has been widely condemned by opposition leaders in the country though several international partners have lauded it.
