Somalia Scales Up War against Desert Locusts

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has teamed up with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to scale up the war against desert locusts.

Desert locusts invaded Somalia and the entire Horn of Africa region towards the end of last year.

Since then, they have left tons of wastage and destruction behind.

Huge tracts of crops have been decimated by the angry huge swarms of desert locusts.

Now, Somalia and FAO are working closely together to ensure that the invasion is stopped right on its track before the situation worsens.

On Friday, November 20, FAO warned that large swarms of the locusts have made their way to the southern parts of the country.

Consequently, FAO has stepped up efforts to eradicate the locusts.

“We have scaled up the survey and control operations in the region,” said Etienne Peterschmitt, FAO’s Representative in Somalia.

He listed some of the measures that FAO and Somalia have jointly embarked.

These include vehicles, aerial sprays, biopesticides, heavy machinery, and insect growth regulators.

Peterschmitt said that they are focusing on specific areas where the population of fresh swarms seems to be on the increase.

According to the FAO Representative, these areas include Sool, Galmudug, Puntland, and Nugal.
