Somalia Stops Domestic Flights While Extending Ban on International Flights over Coronavirus Fears

Somalia has cancelled all domestic flights and extended ban on all international flights to stop Coronavirus from spreading further in the country.

On Saturday, the Ministry of Transport said the two-week ban that came into force in the middle of this month would continue into the foreseeable future.

In the statement, the ministry said, “The previous ban on international flights that was to last two weeks will continue. On March 29, 2020 the ban on local flights comes into effect too.”

The ministry clarified that humanitarian flights are the only ones exempted from the ban on domestic flights.

However, the ministry stated that all humanitarian flights must seek and get clearance 24 hours before departure.

On Friday, the country reported two more Coronavirus confirmations to bring to three the total number of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in Somalia.

The latest announcement follows the warning that the Minister of Health, Dr. Fawziya Abikar issued that the country was open to more COVID-19 patients through its land and sea borders.
