Somalia to Strengthen Relations with China Despite Taiwan’s Overtures

Somalia has announced plans to strengthen its relations with China despite overtures from Taiwan.

Ahmed Isse Awad, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the statement on Friday, November 13.

Awad made the statement during an interview with Anadolu News Agency, which is Turkish News Agency.

He told the news agency that Somalia would not support the call by Taiwan for independence and international recognition.

Awad said that Somalia recognizes Taiwan as a Chinese territory.

The foreign affairs minister also mentioned that Somalia would continue implementing agreements it had signed with China.

Previously, the Federal Government of Somalia warned Taiwan against violating its sovereignty and unity after Taipei recognized Somaliland as an independent nation.
