Somalia, Türkiye Strengthen Maritime Ties at Global Forum

Istanbul, Türkiye – Somalia’s Minister for Ports and Marine Transport, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, held a high-level meeting with Türkiye’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdülkadir Uraloğlu, during the 2025 Global Connectivity Forum in Istanbul, signaling a renewed commitment to deeper bilateral cooperation in ports and maritime infrastructure.

The meeting comes amid Somalia’s broader efforts to revitalize its port systems and leverage international partnerships to drive economic development and enhance regional integration. Nur highlighted Somalia’s strategic geographic location along major international shipping routes and underscored the importance of modernizing the country’s maritime infrastructure to stimulate trade and foster regional stability.

“This engagement reflects our determination to transform Somalia into a competitive logistics hub in the Horn of Africa. We view Türkiye as a valuable and trusted partner in realizing this vision,” Nur said.

For his part, Uraloğlu expressed Türkiye’s readiness to expand technical support, invest in port modernization projects, and facilitate capacity building for Somali maritime professionals.

The Global Connectivity Forum, hosted by Türkiye, brought together transport and infrastructure leaders from around the world to discuss sustainable solutions for global trade, digital logistics, and maritime development. The Somalia-Türkiye bilateral meeting was one of the forum’s key diplomatic highlights, reflecting the strategic weight both countries place on maritime connectivity.

Somalia and Türkiye have enjoyed strong relations over the past decade, with Türkiye investing in infrastructure, education, health, and defense sectors in Somalia. The latest engagement further reinforces their long-term partnership, particularly in the maritime domain.
