Somalia, Turkmenistan Forge Closer Ties in Awaza Talks

Awaza, Turkmenistan —
In a high-level diplomatic meeting held in Awaza, Somalia and Turkmenistan reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations across key sectors. Somali Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Isaak Mohamud Mursal, met with his Turkmen counterpart, Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Gurbanov, to discuss strengthening cooperation in political, economic, trade, and cultural fields.

The talks, which took place on the sidelines of regional multilateral discussions, emphasized the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement between the two nations. According to a statement released by Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministers underscored the value of ongoing dialogue and a shared vision for enhanced bilateral collaboration.

Both sides expressed strong support for United Nations-led initiatives and endorsed Turkmenistan’s ongoing efforts in promoting peace and neutrality in regional affairs. The ministers also pledged their countries’ backing for the upcoming United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), scheduled later this year.

“The Republic of Somalia supports Turkmenistan’s peace diplomacy and sees great potential in our two nations working more closely together on issues that matter globally,” said Deputy Minister Mursal.

The meeting concluded with both delegations agreeing to explore new avenues for cooperation, particularly in trade development, infrastructure, cultural exchange, and regional connectivity. Diplomatic sources say follow-up discussions are expected in the coming months to operationalize the new partnership agenda.

This marks a significant step in Somalia’s broader strategy to expand its diplomatic footprint and economic engagement across Asia and Central Europe.
