Somalia, UN Reinforce Pact for Peace and Development

New York, United States – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held high-level talks with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York, reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to deepening multilateral cooperation.

According to officials, the two leaders discussed a wide range of priorities, including bolstering security gains against terrorism, stabilisation efforts in liberated areas, and strengthening institutional capacity across federal and local governments.

President Mohamud underscored Somalia’s determination to transition from external security support to full sovereign responsibility as the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) hands over to the proposed successor mission.

Secretary-General Guterres reiterated the UN’s long-standing partnership with Somalia, praising the government’s progress in state-building, humanitarian response coordination and economic reforms. He assured continued UN backing for development programming, climate resilience initiatives and governance reforms.

Both leaders agreed to enhance cooperation across UN agencies operating in Somalia to better align support with national priorities, particularly in peacebuilding, social services and sustainable economic recovery.

The meeting comes as Somalia seeks stronger international solidarity to consolidate recent gains and accelerate its journey toward lasting peace and prosperity.
