Somalia, UNIDO Discuss Strengthening Sustainable Fisheries and Expanding Seafood Exports

Mogadishu, Somalia – Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Ahmed Hassan Aden, met with representatives from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Ygor Scarcia and Najib Abdi, to advance cooperation aimed at strengthening Somalia’s fisheries sector.

The high-level meeting focused on enhancing market access for Somali seafood and securing vital food safety certifications required for exports to the European Union. These efforts are part of a broader push to boost Somalia’s seafood exports while maintaining sustainability and compliance with international standards.

Aden emphasized the importance of aligning Somalia’s fisheries industry with global best practices, noting that securing EU certifications would open up significant opportunities for Somali fishers and exporters.

The UNIDO representatives reiterated their commitment to supporting Somalia’s development priorities through technical assistance, capacity building, and institutional strengthening in the fisheries sector.

This collaboration is expected to create long-term economic benefits for coastal communities while contributing to sustainable marine resource management in Somalia.
