The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has been discouraged from shutting down the Internet as the country goes into elections.
On July 23, the #KeepItOn Coalition wrote to Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble asking him to ensure that the Internet remains accessible to all Somalis.
Felicia Anthonio, a campaigner with the #KeepItOn Coalition, said that the Prime Minister must ensure that all Somalis have continuous access to all digital platforms during the elections.
She spoke a few days before the country embarks on elections for Upper House seats.
The East African nation kicks off the electioneering period with senatorial elections, which would then be followed by House of Representatives and presidential polls before the end of October 2021.
Anthonio promised that her organization would keep a close eye on the Somalia elections.
To date, no Internet shutdown has been reported.
However, #KeepItOn and other similar organizations are keeping an eye on the country based on its history of censoring the press and limiting freedom of speech.
