Somalia Welcomes Decision by UNSC to Lift Arms Embargo

Somalia has welcomed the decision by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to lift the decades-long arms embargo.

UNSC voted to lift the arms embargo that it imposed on Somalia in 1992.

Fourteen member states voted to lift the embargo with France the only one abstaining.

Lately, the administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has waged a charm offensive around the world to convince the international community to lift the embargo.

Last month, the President informed the nation that UNSC would lift the embargo.

Somalia expressed “profound gratitude” to the UNSC for such a “momentous decision.”

Somalia added that this pivotal moment and vote allows it to boost national security and stability.

It recognised the role of “tireless diplomatic initiatives” and “strategic alliances” with vital nations worldwide played in this.
