Officials from the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) have traveled to the Middle East to seek support for President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s term extension.
President Farmaajo’s term expired on February 8, 2021 but the country has been unable to hold presidential elections since then.
However, the House of Representatives voted to extend his term by two more years. Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to extend Farmaajo’s term on April 12.
Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation embarked on the tour on Tuesday.
Mohamed Abdirizak, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, traveled to the Middle East accompanied by Hassan Macalin Khalif, a State Minister for the Presidency.
Their tour kicked off amid reports that Somalia’s international partners could sanction individuals in Farmaajo’s administration over the term extension.
