Somalia Yet to Elect 33 Lower House Legislators

Somalia is yet to elect 33 Members of Parliament (MPs) for the House of the People (Lower House).

On March 18, the regional state of Puntland elected six more MPs to represent it in the Lower House in Mogadishu.

Consequently, the country now has 242 MPs out of the 275 that should be in the federal Lower House.

Out of these, 50 MPs are women.

The number of women MPs still falls short of the 30 percent quota the country’s leadership had agreed on earlier.

Jubbaland and HirShabelle are the only two regional states yet to conclude their polls.

They are responsible for the 33 MPs whose elections are yet to take place.
