Somalia’s Defense Ministry to Investigate Alleged Killing of 7 Civilians by AMISOM

Somalia’s Ministry of Defense has promised to launch investigations into the alleged killing of seven civilians by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forces on August 10.

On Tuesday, reports emerged that AMISOM troops in the Lower Shabelle region had killed seven civilians at Golweyn.

However, AMISOM said that the seven individuals were extremists who had laid an ambush for its officers who were in the region to secure a critical supply route.

On Wednesday, the defense ministry released a statement in which it promised to investigate the incident thoroughly.

The ministry admitted that a fight broke out between AMISOM troops and militants in the area.

Nevertheless, it mentioned that it would investigate the “grave allegations of the massacre of seven civilians.”

In addition to that, the defense ministry promised to prosecute any person involved in the matter in case investigations prove that innocent people were killed.
