Somalia’s Education Ministry Launches Unified Curriculum for Secondary Schools

Somalia’s Ministry of Education has introduced a standardized curriculum for students in all secondary schools around the country.

On Wednesday, President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo presided over the launching ceremony in Mogadishu.

Farmaajo said the exercise was a timely effort by the education ministry to ensure that the sector is rebuilt for the benefit of all students and stakeholders.

For years, Somalia has grappled with several non-standardized school systems.

President Farmaajo called the newly unified curriculum a “victory” for all secondary school students in Somalia.

Further, he said the new curriculum would be an accurate reflection of the country’s “needs, history, and culture.”

Farmaajo said this was the next logical step after launching a similar exercise for Primary and Middle School Curriculums.

Since 1991 when the government collapsed, schools in Somalia have taught using Saudi Arabia, Sudanese, and Kenyan education systems.
