Somalia’s Elite Goodir Police Unit Marks 10 Years of Heroic Service

Mogadishu, Somalia — Somalia’s elite rapid response police unit, Goodir, commemorated its 10th anniversary on Wednesday, celebrating a decade of bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to the nation’s security.

Established in 2015 under the federal police force, the Goodir unit was formed to respond swiftly to terror threats, violent crimes, and national emergencies. Over the past decade, the unit has become a symbol of discipline and professionalism, playing a vital role in counterterrorism operations, hostage rescue missions, and VIP protection, particularly in high-risk urban areas.

The 10th anniversary ceremony, held at the Goodir headquarters in Mogadishu, was attended by top government officials, police commanders, foreign dignitaries, and representatives from international partners who have supported Somalia’s security sector reform.

Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, praised the unit’s achievements, stating, “Goodir is more than just a tactical force — it represents the strength and resilience of Somalia’s people. For ten years, these officers have stood on the frontlines, often making the ultimate sacrifice to protect civilians and preserve peace.”

Over the years, Goodir has been instrumental in neutralizing Al-Shabaab cells, particularly during operations in Mogadishu and other volatile regions. Their rapid deployment capabilities have saved countless lives during complex attacks and bombings, earning the respect of both the Somali public and international partners.

Commander Abdullahi Hassan Qorshel, who has led Goodir since 2019, reflected on the journey.

“This milestone is not only about our achievements but a tribute to the heroes we’ve lost. Their legacy lives on in every mission we undertake,” he said.

The unit’s anniversary comes at a time when Somalia is transitioning from reliance on African Union forces to national security leadership. Goodir is expected to play a critical role in the country’s security architecture, especially in urban stabilization and civil protection.

The event concluded with a display of tactical drills, a remembrance for fallen officers, and a renewed pledge to uphold the values of service, loyalty, and national unity.

With a legacy built over a decade, Goodir continues to be a cornerstone of Somalia’s national resilience, proving time and again that courage and commitment are the bedrock of peace.
