Somalia’s Federal Parliament has extended its term by one more year until the end of December 2021.
Its term had expired in December 2020.
However, the country failed to hold parliamentary elections on schedule to give a new batch of legislators the power to take charge of affairs.
On January 4, 2021, news emerged from the parliamentary buildings in Mogadishu, the nation’s capital, stating that parliamentarians opted to renew their term in office.
The move is likely to worsen the already bad situation in the country.
Most likely, opposition politicians could rise up in arms against the legislators.
For months, opposition politicians have been warning that the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), under President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, planned to postpone the elections.
With the parliamentary term now extended to December 2021, it is possible that elections would not take place in the East African nation.
