Somalia’s International Partners Fault Leaders for Not Pursuing Universal Suffrage Polls

Somalia’s international partners faulted the country’s leaders for not pursuing the one-person-one-vote electoral model.

The international partners have been silent since last week on Thursday when a new elections deal was signed at the National Consultation Conference in Mogadishu.

Representatives from the Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States took part in the conference, which lasted four days after being postponed for close to two weeks.

On Monday, September 21, the international partners broke their silence on the agreement.

Instead, they stated that FGS and FMS leaders should have pursued the universal suffrage rather than delegate system for the upcoming polls.

The partners, under the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), threw their weight behind the dialogue among Somali leaders.

However, they issued a statement under UNSOM stating, “We regret the fact that the agreement falls short of the country’s pursuit for direct voting.”

Nevertheless, in their statement, they welcomed “roadmap with milestones on the democratic progress in the country.”
